The Story Behind the SC Flag:
The famous design was commissioned in 1775 for the use of South Carolina's armed forces. A crescent was chosen to represent the emblem worn on the front of their military hats, while the famous Palmetto Tree was a later addition to represent the heroic defense of the fort on Sullivan's Island against attack from the British fleet in 1776. The Fort was constructed of Palmetto Logs, which absorbed the cannon-ball blasts, instead of being blown apart.
