Thin Film Composite Membrane vs. Cellulose Tri-Acetate Membrane

RO TFC membranes are much more effective than CTA reverse osmosis membranes due to their superior performance on water supplies with high pH, TDS, and hardness. Additional benefits of TFC membranes include:

If purchasing a higher capacity membrane for an RO system, you must also select a matching flow control. This will insure adequate flushing and the long term functioning of the reverse osmosis system.

Reverse Osmosis Membrane Retrofitting CTA with TFC

TFC membranes require non-chlorinated water. All municipal water supplies use chlorine or chloramine as a disinfectant. If retrofitting a system that originally used a CTA RO membrane, make sure to replace the sediment prefilter with a carbon block RO prefilter to remove the chlorine. If the RO system has two prefilter housings, install the carbon block RO prefilter in the second housing after the first sediment filter. On non-chlorinated water supplies, no change to the prefilter is necessary. Learn more about the filters required in 3, 4, and 5 stage RO systems.
