DLA-9

Dla9-40pct-nogrey.gif (373 bytes)

Tail-40pct-upright.gif (418 bytes)

Tee-dla9-40pct-upright.gif (793 bytes)

The DLA-9 is designed specifically for use with a garbage disposal mounted on a single compartment sink, to be installed on the 1-1/2" disposal drain outlet.

Indication

Reduce clogging and callbacks, reduce dripping and gurgling noise from airgap faucet, meet plumbing code requirements, and ensure a positive connection.

Recommend

Install the DLA-9 on newer to moderately old disposals that are mounted on a single compartment sink.

Alternate Use

The DLA-9 assembly can be used interchangeably with both the horizontal and vertical DLA-12 configurations.  The DLA-D can also be used instead of a DLA-9 if desired.

DLA-12

dla12-Tee-40pct-upright.gif (781 bytes)

The DLA-12 is designed for use on all undersink tubular plumbing made of ABS, PVC, polypropylene, rough or chrome plated brass or copper, or other approved materials which use 1-1/2" slip joint (SJ) technology.

Indication

Reduce clogging and callbacks, reduce dripping and gurgling noise from airgap faucet (especially by using the horizontal configuration of the DLA-12), meet plumbing code requirements, and ensure a positive connection.

Recommend

Install the DLA-12 on the 1-1/2" drain lines of all single compartment sinks without a disposal, or multi-compartment sinks with or without a disposal.

Alternate Use

The DLA-D can be used instead of a DLA-12, especially when the trap arm has been roughed-in too high and there is insufficient room to install a DLA-12.   The DLA-9 can also be used instead of a DLA-12.

DLA-D

Dlad-nogrey-notxt-40pct-reversed.gif (1583 bytes)

The DLA-D is designed specifically for use with a garbage disposal, to be mounted on the disposal nipple provided for dishwasher drains.  A venturi, which produces a self-cleaning suction, is created when installed in combination with a dishwasher drain.

Indication

Reduce clogging and callbacks, reduce dripping and gurgling noise from airgap faucet, meet plumbing code requirements, and ensure a positive connection.

Recommend

Install the DLA-D on all garbage disposals.  The universal DLA-D will accept any size dishwasher drain hose and is convertible for installation in the absence of a dishwasher drain.  The DLA-D may be installed on a branch tailpiece receiving a 3/4" or 7/8" dishwasher drain hose.

Alternate Use

The DLA-9 can be used instead of the DLA-D

DLA-G

The DLA-G airgap is designed specifically for use on all material Schedule-40 standpipes (requires a no-hub coupling when used with unthreaded galvanized or no-hub cast iron pipe).

Indication

Eliminate splash, spray and mist, provide two vertical inches of airgap, meet plumbing code requirements, and ensure a positive connection.

Recommend

Install the DLA-G on all standpipes which must have an airgap to prevent cross connection of house drain with reject water from an RO, or backwash from a softener conducted through the drain tubing of 5/8" OD or 1/2" ID or smaller.   The DLA-G can be configured to work in tandem with a washing machine standpipe drain or RO/softener combination.  See inlet sizes and connections available.

Tips & Suggestions

To enhance the use of a DLA

It is best to install the reject water tubing as short and direct as possible, avoiding kinks and sags (see Variations below).   Depending on the quality of RO reject water, it may be useful to install a John Guest union vertically on the drain line immediately beneath the airgap faucet/sink in order to quick-change that section of reject water tubing between the faucet and DLA-9, 12, or D.

A pipe cleaner type brush or similar device can be used to ream out the remaining tubing/airgap of bacterial growth back up the other direction as well.  All this can be done quickly and inexpensively during every filter change, thereby reducing or eliminating callbacks.

These suggestions, along with the use of a DLA, will remedy most problems normally associated with airgap faucets

Variations:
Some installers have reported overcoming unusually difficult noise problems by taking the following steps:

DLA-12 horizontal (waste-ell) installation:
Rotate branch outlet of Tee (facing straight up at sink) down 45 degrees, then orient DLA-9/12 adapter up toward airgap faucet accordingly.  Do not backpitch (dip below horizontal) the adapter or tubing.

DLA-12 vertical (tailpiece) installation:
Rotate branch outlet of Tee toward airgap faucet.  Add a new horizontal waste-ell (cut short to length) closer toward airgap faucet, then insert DLA-9/12 adapter into socket of new waste-ell, and orient toward airgap faucet reject water tube.  This will shorten the length of tubing significantly, and may reduce the noise factor in higher flow/output RO systems

DLA-D dishwasher installation:
A DLA-D installed downstream of an airgap faucet, and in tandem with a dishwasher, will perform optimally when the dishwasher has its own (sink mounted) airgap.

Note:
Always run a significant amount of water in the sink to replace the trap water seal on all installations where the trap has been removed and then replaced.  Failing to do so may temporarily increase the noise factor and allow sewer gas to accumulate in the kitchen or room involved.
