Pesticides in Water

Source of Pesticides in Water: Pesticides are a type of synthetic organic chemical that can include herbicides and insecticides. Pesticides can enter groundwater and well water as a result of agricultural runoff. Some pesticides are not soluble in water, and can be found in the soil years after their application. The EPA has banned many pesticides because of their toxicity to humans and their adverse effect on the environment. Other pesticides usually decompose and break down as they perform their intended function. Low levels of pesticides in water are found where complete break down does not occur. There is no US EPA maximum water contamination level (MCL) for pesticides in drinking water as a total; each pesticide is considered separately.

Symptoms of Pesticides: Symptoms for each pesticide will vary. Diclorophenol has been linked with food allergies in children. Atrazine can cause lung and kidney damage. Lindane can damage the heart and muscles. Even though some pesticides have been outlawed or have limited usage, they may still be found in water sources, DDT is one of these. If you are concerned about the presence of a specific pesticide, it is always best to have your tap water or well water tested.

Filtration Solutions for Pesticides in Water: If pesticides find their way into drinking or well water, we offer several filtration and water treatment options. Activated carbon filtration is the most effective way to remove organics whether synthetic (like pesticides in water) or natural. Ultrafiltration is also very effective in removing organic compounds such as pesticides in drinking water. Reverse osmosis systems will remove 97-99% of the pesticides in water.
