Basic Mechanics of How Home Water Softeners Work

Hard water (calcium & magnesium) is a common problem for many homeowners and businesses. When hardness minerals are combined with heat, it forms troublesome scale. Scale causes costly build-up in your plumbing, water heater and other water-using appliances. When combined with soap, the minerals form soap curd or scum that makes skin dry and itchy, hair lifeless, laundry dull, and builds up on fixtures.

Water softeners remove hardness in the water by exchanging particles in the water, or ions. They exchange the hard ions of calcium and magnesium for sodium ions, producing soft water. Unlike calcium or magnesium, sodium stays dissolved in water, and does not form a scale. Sodium also does not interfere with the cleaning action of soaps and detergents.

Click here to learn more about the benefits of a water softener, and how to choose one for your home.

1. The body of a water softener is a tank filled with resin beads that are covered with sodium ions. As hard water passes through, the resin beads act like a magnet attracting the calcium and magnesium ions, or hardness, in exchange for the sodium ions.
2. Eventually the resin beads become saturated with mineral ions and have to be "re-charged." This process is called regeneration, and it can be done with the control valve on the top of the tank. The control valve is the brains of the system.
3. During the regeneration process, a strong brine solution is flushed through the resin tank, bathing the resin beads in a stream of sodium ions. These sodium ions replace the accumulated calcium and magnesium ions.
4. Softened water can then be delivered through out your home.
