Personal Radiation Detection Meters and Dosimeters

Personal radiation detection meters and dosimeters measure the doses of radiation received through indirect and direct ionizing radiation. When exposed to both natural and man-made contaminants in the environment or through ingestion of harmful chemicals in food or water, people may encounter serious health risks including diseases like cancer. To help prevent such situations, we offer a wide selection of selection of testing devices and kits, including radiation detectors and dosimeters for those concerned about radiation exposure.

Radiation Dosimetry

Radiation dosimeters measure the doses of radiation received through indirect and direct ionizing radiation. Small, controlled dosages of radiation are often used in the medical field for diagnostic purposes or to treat diseases, like cancer. Generally, however, humans should avoid harmful doses of radiation or long term exposure. Personal and handheld dosimeters are often used to measure radiation exposure in accidental industrial spills or suspected terrorism. These meters have been used in two well-known accidents.

In 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear plant leaked large quantities of radiation into the environment surrounding the power plant. In 2011, a tsunami and earthquake damaged the Fukishima Daiichi power plant in Japan. This damage eventually led to radiation leaks into the air and groundwater supply. In August 2013, water contaminated with radiation was found to be leaking into the groundwater and running off into the sea, causing further concerns about the containment process and an even wider spread contamination.
